An example of an ectothermic organism that has few or no behavioural options when it comes to its ability to adjust its body temperature is a sea star living deep in the ocean.
Ectothermic organisms are organisms in which internal physiological heat sources are of relatively minor or negligible importance in controlling body temperature.
These organisms (e.g. sea star) depend on environmental heat sources, allowing them to operate at a very economical metabolic rate.
Some of these animals live in environments with practically constant temperatures, which are characteristic of regions of the deep ocean and can therefore be considered endothermic temperatures.
On the other hand, in places where temperature changes greatly limit the physiological activities of other thermophilic species, many species have the habit of seeking outside heat sources or sheltering from heat.
