The Wampanoag Nation's founding fathers are intended when "the Indians" is used in such a wide context in discussions about the Pilgrims and their "first Thanksgiving" feast in 1621. The classic story claims that after arriving in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on the Mayflower in 1620, the Pilgrims had a plentiful harvest the next year. Plymouth Governor William Bradford planned a feast to celebrate the harvest and invited a group of "Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit," to the gathering. Edward Winslow, a historian, claims that the feast lasted three days. In order to get ready, Bradford dispatched four men on a "fowling trip."Five deer were brought to the feast by the Wampanoag guests.
