NASA has been scanning neighboring planets for signs of life, but there is always the possibility that life on other planets could be based on an element other than carbon. Based on your understanding of carbon’s properties, what qualities should NASA be looking for in other elements that might replace carbon on an alien planet?

Respuesta :

NASA looking for life in other planet, the element might replace carbon is silicon.

What are the similarities between carbon and silicon ?

Earth is occupied by a large proportion of two most significant nonmetallic substances such as silicon and carbon.

Silicon is only a little bit more metallic than carbon as it easily loses its electrons.

The valency of both atoms are  4 and have same density.

Carbon is the basic element of life, while silicon is a basic element of the machines, use in making semiconductors

Carbon forms methane, propane, butane, benzene and carbon dioxide

Similarly silicon forms compounds  silane, disilicon hexahydride, silicon tetrafluoride and silicon tetrachloride.
