Until recently, eukaryotes were divided into four major categories called kingdoms.
Eukaryotes are multicellular organisms with a defined nucleus and several chromosomes. The DNA of these organisms is found inside the membrane-bound nucleus and they generally reproduce by sexual reproduction. Eukaryotes are divided mainly into three kingdoms: Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
● Protista
Most of the protists are microscopic and are often single-celled. They can be autotrophic or heterotrophic. They usually reproduce by asexual means. Examples include amoeba, bacteria, plasmodium, etc.
● Fungi
All of them are multicellular organisms, except singular yeast. Some of the fungi are saprotrophic while all others are heterotrophic. They usually reproduce through asexual means. Some of them reproduce through spores and are called sporophytic. Examples include mushrooms, yeast, etc.
● Plantae
Organisms of this kingdom are multicellular and autotrophic. They have chloroplasts through which they perform photosynthesis. Chloroplasts possess chlorophyll which provides them a green color. They are further divided into bryophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. Examples include mango trees, timber, etc.
● Animalia
This kingdom comprises the most complex organism. All of these organisms are multicellular and heterotrophic. They reproduce sexually and do not have cell walls. Examples include human beings, fishes, etc.
