According to legend, Caunus loved his sister more than his brother, and because he couldn't get over it, he left his father's home and Miletus and settled in Lycia. Byblis, distraught over her brother's disappearance, set out to find him and, after a long wandering, hanged herself with her girdle. The well Byblis arose from her tears. Byblis herself was overcome with a hopeless love for her brother, and as she was about to leap from a cliff into the sea, she was stopped by nymphs, who put her to sleep.
