Richard Wright was born on a plantation near Natchez, Mississippi, on September 4, 1908. His father, Nathaniel, was an illiterate sharecropper and his mother, Ella Wilson, was a well-educated school teacher. The family's extreme poverty led them to move them towards to Memphis when Richard was six years old.
He was stubborn and proud. He was afraid of his father.
Richard never feels close to his father he is only scared by him. At first, in Memphis, his sleeping habits interfere with the boys' games and his temper is irrational he mishandle him and his mother as well. Later on, when Richard's mother tries to get some support from him and brings along the boy to remind him of his responsibilities, he is openly living with another woman.
His father is seemingly more at ease with his a woman who was not his mother than he ever was with Richard's mother. They have a laughing, sensuous relationship which mocks all the suffering which Richard and his mother must endure.
when Richard meets his father again, when he became an old man, it is in Mississippi and the old man is a sharecropper. He now represents much more than a personal memory to Richard, he opened up to Richard later in his life.
