In 1989, the Tiananmen square protests had illustrated, the difference between totalitarian and democratic societies, in regard to a collective action.
The June Fourth Incident, which is also known as the Tiananmen square protests to the world, was protests led out by the students which was brutally suppressed and tolls of deaths were estimated to thousands.
The students in the protest were trying to explain the difference between a totalitarian society and a democratic society, which was not accepted by the Chinese government and they sent the troops to the Tiananmen square.
This had resulted into a massacre, or known as the 4th June clearing, the troops were led by the brother of the then, President Yang Shangkun, General Yang Baibing.
