A radioactive iodine uptake test uses radioactive iodine administered orally to measure thyroid function.

A radioactive iodine uptake test is generally performed to detect any residual thyroid tissue after or during thyroidectomy. Thyroidectomy, the surgical removal of the thyroid gland, is operated on to get rid of cancer or other severe problems associated with the gland. RAI, i.e., Radioactive iodine is taken orally and gets absorbed by the thyroid tissue or cell remnants. The thyroid gland can concentrate iodine and glow up with the RAI. This helps the doctors to perform more treatments following thyroid surgery if necessary.

WBS, an abbreviation for whole body scans, are also performed after surgery or days following surgery to detect if any thyroid cancer cells are spread to the body. The scan uses RAI administered by the doctors.
