Seventy-three-year-old Arturo was a surgeon for 45 years. Now that he is retired, he mentors young physicians on ethical judgments on medical issues. Arturo is in Erikson's ego integrity-versus-despair stage of development.
From infancy to maturity, Erikson argued that personality develops via eight stages of psychosocial development in a set order. The person goes through a psychological crisis at each level, which may or may not affect how their personality develops.
The eighth and last stage of Erikson's five-stage model of psychosocial development is ego integrity versus despair. This period lasts till death and starts about age 65. This is the period when we reflect on our successes and, if we believe we are leading a successful life, we can build integrity. People who think back on their lives and regret not accomplishing their ambitions will feel resentful and hopeless.
