The hierarchical arrangement of individuals into categories such as classes, castes, or divisions within a society is referred to as social stratification.
Social stratification is the system by which a society ranks its members by groups into a hierarchy, typically in an order that reflects their wealth, status, and/or power. An individual’s place in this hierarchy will affect the opportunities, resources, and even sometimes the rights available to them. In a stratified society, the upper classes will have more access to and control over resources and positions of power, while the lower classes will have far less access and fewer advantages in life.
Beyond specific instances of inequality, social stratification is an overall social characteristic. There will be no doubt about the distinctions between the upper and lower classes, and there will always be inequality between them.
Social inequality endures throughout generations. Children born into higher social classes are more likely to pass on the riches, power, and influence of their parents to their own offspring, whereas children born into lower social classes are more likely to confront insurmountable challenges in their quest to surpass their parents in social standing.
