Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) that is used to treat pain, fever, and inflammation. This includes rheumatoid arthritis, migraines, and painful periods.  It can also be used to seal a premature baby's patent ductus arteriosus. It may be administered intravenously or orally. Normally, it starts working after an hour.

While employed by Boots UK Limited, Stewart Adams and John Nicholson discovered ibuprofen in 1961. It was first sold under the name Brufen. It is sold under a variety of brand names, such as Nurofen, Advil, and Motrin. In the UK and the US, ibuprofen was initially commercially available in 1969 and 1974, respectively.
