Shostakovich's symphony no 7 was performed in Leningrad as a symbol of defiance and endurance.
The Symphony was performed for the first time in the summer of 1942 by a local orchestra, directed by conductor Karl Eliasberg. Since the stable Philarmonic had been disbanded during the siege, musicians were recruited for the occasion. The orchestra rehearsed under very strict conditions.
The performance was done after a Russian attack on the German encirclement. It was broadcast on Leningrad's radio and played on loudspeakers all over the city for citizens and troops of both armies to listen.
Shostakovich's symphony became a standard during the siege of Leningrad and became known as Leningrad's Symphony.
