A fluid shift is the rapid water movement between the extracellular fluid and the intracellular fluid.

When the body's fluid move from one compartment to another that is called fluid shift.

Fluid shifts are caused due to profound changes in vascular permeability and water electrolyte imbalance. It can also be due to weightlessness in which case the fluid shift is from lower body to upper body.

There are three major fluid compartments; intravascular, interstitial, and intracellular. Fluid movement among them occur in between capillaries. Four major body fluids are interstitial fluids, saliva, tears, and gastric juices.

Fluid imbalance in the body is generally caused due to diarrhea, vomiting, severe blood loss, or high fever.
