Definition of Hypokalemia
After CABG, hypokalemia is a frequent complication that must be treated right once with a potassium infusion in order to prevent postoperative dysrhythmias. Following cardiopulmonary bypass, confusion is frequent in the immediate postoperative period. The nurse will keep an eye on it, but there is no need for further action at this time. After CABG, incisional pain is typical; the nurse will give you the painkillers you need, but this consequence is not life-threatening. In the initial hours following CABG, chest tube drainage of 100 to 200 mL is not unusual; the nurse will check the chest tube drainage hourly, but no more intervention is required.
