When the grandmother calls the misfit one of her own children, he shoots her.

In "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," the grandmother claims that the Misfit is one of her children despite the fact that she only has one son, in order to appeal to his better nature while also seeing him as a fellow human being for the first time. Unfortunately for the grandmother, this attempt backfires, as she discovers when he murders her. Throughout the story, the grandmother has made it clear that she is the type to freely pass judgement on others. She regrets the changing times that have led to people becoming less respectable and trustworthy and believes herself to be a lady, in contrast to so many others around her.
