Your teacher is saying that talking in 2nd person is informal. Which for academic writing, it is. Try changing it to 3rd person. Refer to the person as the reader, or as "one".
For example:
2nd Person:
You might say your favorite color is blue.
3rd Person:
One might say their favorite color is blue.
