In the months after Lexington and Concorde, much of the fighting centered on Massachusetts. Howe’s army attacked rebel troops stationed on Breed’s Hill across the Charles River from Boston, and eventually drove them away (in a battle named for Bunker Hill, which lay nearby), but only after suffering heavy casualties. Howe remained in occupied Boston, awaiting reinforcements and planning another assault on New England.
