According to Durkheim, the factor that drives the shift from a mechanical or segmental solidarity to organic solidarity is the specialization of people's professional and social role.

What was Durkheim argument?

Concerning the mechanical solidarity, Durkheim sees all people as they group themselves together in a social unit or in an association. These people all have their own ideas and their own minds.

Durkheim's argument was that we have two types of social solidarity which includes "how the society holds together" and "what ties the individual to the society". These two forms of mechanical solidarity characterizes earlier or traditional societies where the division of labour is relatively limited.

He argued that the division of labour itself which creates organic solidarity because of mutual needs of individuals in modern society. In both societies types, all the individuals for the most part “interact in accordance with their obligations to others and to society as a whole.
