In breaching experiments, the researcher revealed the presence of often invisible social norms and the society’s resilience towards social reality by purposely breaking the social norm and observing the subject’s reaction to neutralize the breach or express frustration.

Breaching experiments, conducted by sociologist Harold Garfinkel, as part of its research strategy called ethnomethodology. The experiments were designed to expose the subjects (unaware of the experiment) to breach situations that violated the social norms and were socially awkward. The aim of these experiments people has shared social assumptions about interacting with others as both have same taken-for- granted ideas, these ideas are used by people to interpret their world, and when these ideas are violated, people are frustrated.
