Despite the fact that Freud's psychoanalytic theory has received much criticism and contempt, particularly for the clear fact that, unlike most psychologists, he did not use empirical research or studies to support his claims.
The concepts of the unconscious mind, the significance of early events, and our defensive self-protective systems were all originally brought to light by Freud. Freud's theories have drawn criticism for three reasons: (1) not being scientifically testable; (2) emphasizing after-the-fact explanations; (3) basing their theories on the idea of repression, which has not been proven to be true by contemporary research.
According to Freud's view, our unconscious is where we store unpleasant memories and other "unwanted" thoughts. Even though we aren't conscious of them, memories of challenging, even tragic experiences have a way of affecting how we behave.
