The Berlin Blockade was one of the Cold War's first major international crises. During the multinational occupation of postwar Germany, the Soviet Union blocked Western Allied forces' rail line, road, and canal access to Western-controlled areas of Berlin. A massive US-British airlift of essential supplies to West Berlin's 2 million citizens had broken the blockade. At the end of WWII, Germany was split into 4 sectors, each administered by one of the 4 key Allied powers: the USSR, the US, the United Kingdom, and France.
