What is Job Characteristics Theory ?

A theory of work design is the theory of job characteristics. In organizational settings, it offers "a set of practical principles for enhancing tasks."  The original version of the job characteristics theory proposed a model of five "core" job characteristics, including skill diversity, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback, that influence five work-related outcomes, including motivation, satisfaction, performance, absenteeism, and turnover, through three psychological states.

In the 1960s, work redesign initially gained traction. Up until that point, the general belief was that jobs should be made simpler in order to increase production, but it was discovered that when workers were required to perform highly routine and repetitive tasks, the benefits of simplification occasionally vanished as a result of employee dissatisfaction. Instead of reducing employment to a list of monotonous chores, it was suggested that they be enhanced in ways that increased motivation. The Job Characteristics Theory was born from this perspective.
