In 1893 the Queen was deposed and a pro-American government appointed. The United States government declared the seizure of power illegal and offered Liliuokalani her throne if she would pardon all those responsible for the coup. The Queen rejected this offer because of the violence used in her deposition; President Grover Cleveland referred the matter to the Congress, which promptly proclaimed the Republic of Hawaii with Sanford Dole as the first head of state.
In January 1895, a few days after a failed coup by Robert Wilcox, Liliuokalani was arrested on suspicion of illegal possession of firearms. She was released in 1896 and lived in Washington Place in Honolulu until her death in 1917.
