What is otitis media?

Otitis media is an ear infection in which there is inflammation of the middle ear.

The infection is usually caused by bacteria or viruses.

The symptoms of otitis media include the following:

  • pain in the ear especially in a lying position
  • difficulty sleeping.
  • excessive pain in the ear
  • Trouble hearing or responding to sounds.
  • Loss of balance.

Because the hearing mechanism involves vibrations of the eardrum which are then transmitted to the inner ear through the middle ear, ear infections usually affect the ability to hear sound properly.

A build-up of fluid in the middle ear interferes with the vibrations of the ear drum as well as their transmission through the middle ear to the inner ear.
