August Wilson's play "Fences" uses one climactic point to illustrate the dynamics of relationships and the several dramatic ways in which they might be built.
Troy, Wilson's main character, serves as the foundation for four different kinds of interactions. He emphasize the relationship between Troy and Troy's wife, Rose, to highlight the difficulties of marriage and love. In the bond between Troy and Troy's brother, Gabriel, he depicts loyalty and treachery. In the interaction between Troy and Troy's son, Cory, he illustrates the difficult father and son bond. Finally, he exemplifies true friendship through the bond between Troy and Bono, Troy's best buddy. In just three short acts, Wilson skillfully designs the novel to depict a wide variety of interactions.
Troy has a child with the younger woman after cheating on his devoted wife. Wilson and Rose, Troy's wife, appear to be setting the stage. Rose sticks by Troy despite all of his difficulties. Wilson presents Rose as virtually the ideal wife of the era. She is dependable, always has dinner prepared, and is available whenever Troy wants her for some nighttime fun.
