As the economy grew in the fifth century BC, more people started working as dealers and merchants. These traders and merchants had strong ties to Buddhism's teachings, and Buddhism grew in significance within their societies.
Buddhism was able to spread over the entire Mauryan empire in this fashion. The first empire to almost completely encircle the Indian peninsula was the Mauryan Empire, which was once the biggest in Indian history. The Mauryan empire as a whole saw the growth of Buddhism through to trade relations and routes. The Silk Road helped the spread of Buddhism throughout Central Asia.
At the time of Emperor Ashoka, the Mauryan empire was at its height.
