Some notable achievements and setbacks of the labor movement between 1876 and 1913 are:

Achievements: The Great Strike of 1877 by the railway workers of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to protest against wage cuts might have been ended by the federal troops but it had a huge impact and inspired other strikes.

Setbacks: The Haymarket Affair: people gathered in Chicago's Haymarket Square to protest police brutality after a striker had been killed and many wounded at the McCormick Harvester plant. The event turned violent when someone threw a bomb and the police opened fire.

The American Federation of Labour was able to reach agreements for higher wages and shorter workweeks for skilled workers. The American Railway Union was formed to represent the interests of both skilled and unskilled workers.

Strikes threatened the industry by refusing to let the capitalist entrepreneurs control every aspect of the workers' lives. It hit them where it hurt the most profit.
