John is a beggar in this folk tale who helped Andrus's progress in the story.
In this Serbian folktale, a little girl prevents her wealthy but harsh father from killing three elderly men who knock on his door pleading for money. The elderly men are actually fairies, not true beggars. They predict that the wealthy man's entire estate will one day belong to a baby boy who lives in a nearby village. When the wealthy man realises this, he makes multiple attempts to murder the boy. But the boy lives, and the fairies' prediction comes true. The wealthy man will eventually be forced to work in a job that is worse than begging for the rest of eternity.
The folktale is of the "you can't change fate" or self-fulfilling prophecy kind. The Fish and the Ring, an English folktale with a related premise, was previously featured on our site. Literature is full of these kinds of tales, from Voldemort in Harry Potter to the fabled Greek king Oedipus, who carried out a prophecy that he would kill his father and wed his mother (who, in reacting to a prophecy that a boy born at a certain time will lead to his downfall, brought about conditions that made it come true).
