He discovered that the canines naturally salivated when they saw food, but they also started to salivate whenever they saw the lab assistant in the white coat carrying the meal.
The lab assistant, which had previously been neutral, had come to be connected with the meal, which was an unconditioned stimuli that spontaneously and instinctively elicited a reaction (salivating). After the neutral stimulus was connected to the unconditioned stimulus, it developed into a conditioned stimulus that could independently elicit the conditioned response.
