New Jersey | 26th December 1776 General George Washington's forces defeated a garrison of Hessian mercenaries at Trenton after navigating a perilous crossing of the Delaware River in a storm.

The victory raised the morale of the American soldiers and prepared the ground for another triumph at Princeton a week later. In and around Trenton, New Jersey, there was a Hessian garrison of about 1,400 soldiers, and Washington's plan was to launch a surprise attack. In the new year, Washington believed that a fast victory at Trenton would boost the morale of his troops and encourage additional men to enlist in the Continental Army.
