From 19 September 1870 until 28 January 1871, armies from the different North German Confederation nations, led by the Kingdom of Prussia, besieged Paris before taking the city.
In order to bring about the unity of a vast German empire, it is both inevitable and vital to incite German nationalism in those states. Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck subsequently said, "I did not doubt that a Franco-German war must take occurred before the construction of a United Germany could be realized," as the best example of this goal. Bismarck also understood that France should initiate hostilities in order to persuade the four southern German nations to support Prussia and give the Germans a numerical advantage.
