Yes. We were as surprised as the guards that they behaved in such a brutal way.

The majority of the guards had a hard time accepting that they had acted in such violent ways. Many claimed they were unaware of this aspect of themselves or their capacity for such actions.

One guard remarked, At myself, I was shocked. They had to yell at one another and scrub the bathrooms with their bare hands, both of which I made them do. I viewed the detainees as little more than animals, and I was constantly concerned for them in case they did anything.

The inmates also found it hard to comprehend that their behavior was so submissive, huddled, and reliant. Many people asserted that they were typically forceful people.

When questioned about the guards, the inmates gave the standard three prison cliches to describe them: some officers were excellent, some were harsh but fair, and some were vicious.

The fact that the guards could behave in such a way without feeling regret or shame astonished them, but they claim that the uniform and circumstances made them susceptible.
