Bringing in victims like the Maidens was the U.S.'s principal worry since doing so would result in a public admission of guilt. They were mistaken in their initial hesitation to forbid the ladies from coming, but regardless of their error, these girls suffered as a result of our government's error, and they shouldn't have to bear the cost.
Our tribal natures, the limits of empathy when we kill from a distance, and the spiraling effect of retaliatory violence are all things that the Pacific War against Japan may teach us. It is morally required of us to learn from such lessons, maybe by taming some of our more perilous tendencies.
