What was Wampanoag history?

With approximately 67 different tribal settlements, the Wampanoag Nation formerly covered all of Southeast Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island. Following their assistance to pilgrims in the early 1600s, the Wampanoag people have endured a very trying past. Our tribe experienced a great deal of hardship as a result of the arrival of the European settlers, including disease that nearly wiped out entire villages, government structures that had little in common with our tribal practises and values, missionaries determined to win us over to Christianity, and private models of land use and ownership that went against our tribe's own communal practises and values. Battles that colonists started in order to secure land resulted in the death of a vast majority of these tribal communities. Only six clearly visible tribal communities exist today.
