The progress of this class of antibiotics in terms of potency, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity is discussed in this overview, along with the mechanisms of resistance that lessen the efficacy of quinolones against bacteria. Future generations of quinolone antibiotics with improved activity against resistant pathogens may employ the recommended approaches.

Quinolone antibiotics are usually not approved for use in children due to cartilage defects found in the weightbearing joints of juvenile animals given fluoroquinolones.
