In 1894, the English astronomer Edward Walter Maunder noted that very few sunspots had been observed between 1645 and 1715.
The Maunder Minimum was a period between 1645 and 1715 in which a record number of sunspots were observed. This is also when parts of the world were experiencing very cold weather, resulting in the "Little Ice Age". The reason for climate change is the calm sun with few sunspots, which was the belief at the time.
