The coming of the railroad led to ranchers in the Great Plains starting to raise cattle on small, enclosed lands. Rails allowed for more market access as they crossed America. Extended cattle drives were no longer necessary.

The 200 artificial lakes in this state are more than any other. The tallest hill in the world, Mount Cavanal, is said to be 1,999 feet high and is located west of Poteau.
