What is Statue of Liberty?
A massive neoclassical sculpture known as the Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island throughout New York Harbor in the American city of New York. The copper statue, a gift from the French people, was created by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and Gustave Eiffel constructed its metal framework. October 28, 1886 saw the dedication of the statue. The statue depicts Libertas, a robed Roman goddess of liberty. In her left hand, she holds a tabula ansata with the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI, the date of the United States Declaration of Independence, while holding a torch over her head in her right hand. As she advances, she leaves a broken shackle as well as chain at her feet as a tribute to the recent abolition of slavery in this country.
