The novel says that. Ralph hides in the jungle, lamenting the chaos that has engulfed the island. He considers Simon and Piggy's deaths and realises that the island has been stripped of all traces of civilization.
Ralph looks up to find a naval officer standing over him. The officer informs the boy that his ship has arrived on the island in response to the raging fire in the jungle. When Jack's hunters arrive at the beach, they come to a halt when they see the officer. The officer assumes the boys are having "fun and games," as he puts it. Ralph takes refuge in a thicket and falls asleep. He hears Jack talking and torturing one of the twins in the morning to find out where Ralph is hiding. Several boys roll a boulder to try to break through the thicket, but the thicket is too dense. A group of boys attempts to fight their way through the thicket, but Ralph repels them. When Ralph smells smoke, he realises Jack has set fire to the jungle in order to smoke him out.
