Slaves in America desired to run away from their owners and find shelter from the very beginning of slavery. It is impossible to comprehend the risk and effort involved in escaping from slavery.
The majority of slaves in America lacked money and were ignorant. Because of the color of their skin, they were easy prey for those who would go looking for them during the day and bring them back to their masters, frequently with the aid of bloodhounds.
Before they could find sanctuary in a free state or in Canada, many runaways had a great deal of walking to do. Therefore, it is not surprising that the vast majority of slaves who broke out from bondage were apprehended. In an effort to discourage others from attempting to flee, the majority of those who were returned to their masters suffered terrible punishment. Despite the risks, many runaways were able to go north and into states where slavery was no longer legal.
