The Compromise of 1850 was a piece of legislation put up by Sen. Henry Clay of Kentucky, known as the "great compromiser," and approved by the U.S. Congress in an effort to resolve a number of unresolved slavery-related concerns and prevent the Union from dissolving. The act demanded the Fugitive Slave Act be changed, called for the elimination of the slave trade in Washington, DC.
Moreover, the act set a boundary between Texas and the United States, and urged for the admittance of California as a "free state." Although both sides benefited, it seemed that the north benefited the most. The free states now held a majority in the American Senate, despite California frequently siding with the south on numerous matters in the 1850s. In the end, the north refused to enforce it.
