The hydronium concentration is expressed as the negative log base 10 of pH. A solution's hydrogen ion concentration is measured logarithmically by the pH scale.
Why is pH important?
- Only under specific pH conditions do some chemical reactions occur. Sometimes this is as a result of the reaction's reactant, H+ or OH-. Other times, an acid or base can catalyze a reaction, influencing how quickly it occurs.
- Living things rely on a wide range of biochemical processes and reactions, the majority of which need particular pH ranges. Because of this, ecosystems like lakes and rivers thrive when the pH levels are good for the local flora and fauna's biochemistry.
- Similar to an ecosystem, the human body has a specific pH that enables the proper performance of the various functions that our body carries out. In our blood, we need one value, and in the fluids that make up our digestive system, we need a completely different (much more acidic) value. Otherwise, regular biochemistry may malfunction, potentially endangering your health. Fortunately, the blood in humans and many other animals is buffered, making it difficult for the pH to change rapidly. In order to prevent the negative effects of imbalance, drink a bottle of alkaline water or an acidic soda. Your blood will essentially remain the same.
- The fact that the common health advantages of alkaline water are mostly untrue is another effect of this safety net in your blood. Drinking some water with a pH of 8 wouldn't significantly alter your blood's acidity, even if it were somehow too acidic.
