The 21st president of the United States, Chester A. Arthur, was an American lawyer and politician who presided over the country from 1881 until 1885. Previously the 20th vice president of the United States, he took office in September 1881, two months after President James A. Garfield was assassinated.
Arthur was raised in upstate New York, was born in Fairfield, Vermont, and worked as a lawyer in New York City. During the American Civil War, he was the New York Militia's quartermaster general. He was a significant supporter of Conkling and the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party when President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him to the position of Collector of the Port of New York in 1871.
