The zone of proximal development is a term coined by Vygotsky to describe the gap between what children are capable of doing on their own and what they cannot.

He believed that violating this zone—either by helping kids with things they can do on their own or by not helping them sufficiently with challenging tasks—hinders cognitive development. In a perfect world, adults who interact with kids would initially take the majority of the initiative in problem-solving before eventually handing it off to the kids themselves.
