During the first world war in the second decade of the 20th century, Europe was split into two factions. Triple alliances and triple entente. Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Germany formed a trilateral alliance. There was a "triple entente" made up of Russia, France, and Britain.

Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the secret Triple Alliance in May 1882, and it was periodically renewed until World War I. Since 1879, Germany and Austria-Hungary have maintained a tight alliance. Shortly after the French won the objectives in North Africa, Italy asked for help against France.

From 1880 until the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy had a military alliance (an agreement to fight together). If any other nation attacked them, the three foreign places pledged to support one another.

Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed an army partnership known as the Triple Alliance. It was established on May 20th, 1882, and was renewed on a cyclical basis until it expired in 1915, during World War I. Since 1879, Germany and Austria-Hungary have been carefully aligned.
