Traditionally, Abraham Lincoln is credited with declaring Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. He deserves a lot of it for making it a yearly occasion. Lincoln, though, was remembering a former custom of giving thanks among the difficulties of war, whether it was going well or not. The Revolutionary War generation was not the first to observe the custom, but they were just as likely as anybody else in American history to hold a national day of thanksgiving.
Although colonial governors and legislative bodies had previously declared a day for thanksgiving, the United States as a nation first did so in 1777 when the Continental Congress designated December 18 as a day for "solemn thanksgiving and praise."
