Former Whig Party members gather in Ripon, Wisconsin, to create a new organization that will fight the expansion of slavery into the western regions. Because the Whig Party had perished and because Millard Filmore, the final Whig president, had signed the Fugitive Slave Act and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, it was necessary to restrict the spread of slavery to them.
The Whigs, Free Soilers, and anti-slavery Democrats came together to establish the Republicans. The party currently supports lower taxes, free market capitalism, deregulation of corporations, restrictions on labor unions, and other fiscally conservative policies.
