The irony is that despite the fact that they are genuine friends, he was transformed into a representation of the toll that war takes on its participants.
They got into a quarrel, overreacted, and pretended to hate one another even though they aren't actually enemies. They are only acting that way because they are both involved in a battle. Due to the fact that they are on the same side of the conflict, even if they were adversaries, they couldn't be real enemies.
