- The Chicago Defender was the first black newspaper with a circulation of 100,000 or more, the first with a health column, and the first with a full page of comic strips. The Chicago Defender ran its most aggressive (and successful) campaign in support of the "Great Migration" movement during World War I.
- On Saturday, March 4, 1837, the City of Chicago was incorporated, and it was the world's fastest-growing city for several decades. As the site of the Chicago Portage, the city grew into an important transportation hub connecting the east and west of the country.
- To blacks in the South, Chicago represented the "Promised Land." Stories of big city life — good-paying jobs, running water in homes, and basic freedoms denied to blacks in the South — made the Northern city a popular destination for blacks fleeing the South.
