In the fourth century BC, Aristotle was the first to identify the three main types of governments. These were polity, monarchy, and aristocracy.
In a monarchy, a single family has supreme power over the entire state and transmits it from one generation to the next. In a monarchy, the position of power is held by a member of the royal family until their death. Today, the vast majority of monarchy governments have transformed into constitutional monarchies, in which the head of state only performs ceremonial duties and has no real power. Only a small number of countries, including Brunei, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Swaziland, still have monarchical governments.
Aristocracy is in charge in the UK, Spain, Denmark, India, and Nigeria, among other countries. The political, economic, and social realms are controlled by a small, wealthy elite class known as the privileged class in an aristocracy.
A polity is an established political entity made up of a group of people who are connected by institutionalized social ties, a shared sense of identity, and the capacity to mobilize resources.
